Climbing an 8,000-meter peak in Nepal is one of the most demanding mountaineering challenges in the world. The required equipment depends heavily on the expedition style. A climber joining a Base Camp Only (BCO) expedition must be significantly more self-sufficient than someone on a Full Board expedition with Sherpa support.

This guide outlines the equipment categories for both approaches. The exact gear may vary depending on the mountain (Everest, Manaslu, Cho Oyu, etc.), the season, weather conditions, and personal preferences.

I share my gear list based on Manaslu solo climb with base camp only package and Everest full board package. You also can download full equipment list, link is provided bellow.

Important: This is a template intended to help you organize your packing list. Add or remove items based on your expedition operator's requirements and your own experience.

Equipment Before Reaching Base Camp

The journey to Base Camp is often overlooked when preparing for an 8,000-meter expedition. However, you'll spend several days trekking through villages, mountain trails, and changing weather conditions before the actual climb begins. Of course, you may take a heli and skip this part.

Most expedition operators transport your main expedition duffel to Base Camp using porters, yaks, or helicopters (depending on the mountain and package). You will typically carry only a small daypack with the essentials needed during each day of the trek.

Expedition Duffel Bags

Your main climbing equipment should be packed in durable expedition duffel bags designed to withstand rough handling and harsh weather.

I use two of them 120 - 160 liters each. Some expedition providers may give you a duffel bag in Kathmandu.

Trekking Clothing

The trek to Base Camp usually takes several days and passes through a wide range of temperatures. Lightweight, breathable clothing is generally sufficient during the day, while mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold.

Trekking Footwear

Comfortable, well-broken-in trekking boots or hiking shoes are essential. Reserve your high-altitude double or triple boots for the climbing phase.

Daypack

Your daypack should carry everything you'll need during a typical trekking day while your expedition duffel is transported separately.

Typical contents include:

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • Extra clothing layer

  • Waterproof jacket

  • Camera

  • Power bank

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Personal medications

  • Passport and valuables

Electronics

You'll have opportunities to charge devices in many trekking lodges, although electricity is often paid separately and may not always be reliable.

Don't forget charging cables and adapters!

Documents and Money

Keep all important documents and valuables with you rather than in your expedition duffel.

  • Passport

  • Permits (if applicable)

  • Travel insurance

  • Cash (Nepalese Rupees and small USD bills)

  • Credit/debit card

  • Emergency contacts

Personal Comfort Items

Small items can make the multi-day trek significantly more enjoyable.

  • Earplugs

  • Lip balm

  • Sunscreen

  • Wet wipes

  • Book or e-reader

  • Lightweight sandals for lodges

  • Light sleeping bag, not mandatory, but I prefer to have it, just in case.
  • Headlamp

Tips for Packing Before Base Camp

  • Pack your duffel so that frequently used items are easy to access once you reach Base Camp.

  • Keep valuable electronics, documents, batteries, and medications in your daypack.

  • Use waterproof stuff sacks or dry bags to organize clothing and protect sensitive equipment.

  • Clearly label every bag with your name and expedition details.

  • Avoid overpacking—every unnecessary kilogram makes transportation more difficult and expensive.

Climbing Equipment

1. Solo Expedition (Base Camp Only Service)

A Base Camp Only (BCO) package provides permits, Base Camp facilities, and limited logistical support.

Above Base Camp, you are responsible for carrying, maintaining, and using your own equipment. You need to establish temporary camps, prepare food, and carry additional camping gear.
